Encrypted Vaults
One encrypted .tsbx file for the whole workspace
Each Vault is a standalone file, convenient to store, back up or move around. Content, document titles, edit history, attachments and workspace state are all encrypted locally with XChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption before being written to disk. The encryption key is derived from your Master Password with Argon2id.
- Create several encrypted Vaults for several purposes: work, personal notes, research, long-term storage.
- Back up by simply copying the Vault file — the copy stays encrypted.
- Recent Vaults reopens the Vault you just used (the Master Password is still required to decrypt it).

Documents can be pinned, sorted, opened in multiple tabs, moved to Trash and restored when needed. Recent Documents and Recent Vaults bring you back to recent work quickly.
When you reopen a Vault, TextSandbox restores your previous session — you simply continue where you stopped.
Import & export
Bring content in — and take it out when needed
You can drag text files into the workspace or import a whole folder. New documents land in the Vault, get encrypted and are autosaved like everything else.
Drag & drop, folder import
Import many files or an entire text folder at once, with detection of common encodings. Plain files are encrypted the moment they enter the Vault.
Plaintext export
Export the current document to plaintext after confirming a warning — the exported file is no longer encrypted, so you always know when data leaves the encrypted area.
Encrypted Vault backups
Create an encrypted Vault backup to store elsewhere — safe for long-term archiving.
Encrypted version history
Review older content, compare changes and restore a previous version — the whole history is encrypted inside the Vault too. Deleting a document goes through Trash by default to reduce accidental data loss.
Encrypted attachments
A Vault stores attachments encrypted alongside your text. The app decrypts them temporarily in memory to preview images, PDFs and some common formats — no external service involved.
Recovery Key & auto-lock
The Recovery Key is the only second path to the decryption key if you forget the Master Password. On auto-lock, the decryption key is discarded from memory and the Vault returns to its encrypted state.

Automatic system-language detection with in-app switching. The interface supports light, dark or system appearance.
On window close: TextSandbox encrypts and saves your edits along with the workspace state, confirms the Vault is safely locked, and only then exits.
